Birds, wildlife and exotic pets hospital
The birds, wildlife and game hospital was opened in 1999 with the help of
the Conseil Régional (Regional Body) that provided half of the funding. It
has been able to develop scientific and clinical activity specialising in
wildlife as well as exotic pets. The unit is managed by Professor J.Y
Jouglar with professor J.Ducos de la Hitte's assistance.
This unit was established to care for pet birds, wild birds as well as other
wild animals and game and ensure a sanitary surveillance for wild fauna.
Each year, the clinic treats about 500 wild animals among which 30% are
freed in the wild. There are no costs for people rescuing animals and
bringing them to the clinic.
The hospital works closely with the Midi-Pyrénées and Aquitaine Hunters'
Associations which grant funds for the management of wild fauna and
game. It also handle exotic animals and works for zoos and circuses.
Advice is also given to pet and exotic animal shops as well as breeders.
The clinic is open from Monday to Friday and offer an emergency service.
This activity had been developed as a result of the recruitment of 2
clinicians, Drs Feix and Perrin.
Finally the wildlife clinic enable the students to familiarise themselves with
new clinical practices.
